Altered Alebrije

6th Grade students were introduced to Oaxaca artists, Mexican folk art and Disney's Coco. Students were tasked with creating an Alebrije by altering a stuffed animal or using a wire sculpture base. Students learned to craft their figures from plaster wrap and recycled materials. Students were encouraged to paint an Alebrije that represented an animal or creature that specifically existed just for them. Just like in Disney's Coco there could be multiple animals or creatures but each were unique to the person that they were to guide in the spirit world.
